Gambling help by country: helplines, self-exclusion registers and support organisations

Last reviewed: 30 May 2026

A world map motif representing gambling support services in different countries

Where you live changes what help looks like. Some countries run a single national register that blocks every licensed gambling site at once; others organise support region by region. The list below brings the main services together, country by country, so you can find the right helpline, register or charity quickly. Every service named here is free to contact.

United Kingdom

The UK has the most developed support network: one national online self-exclusion register (GAMSTOP), a free 24/7 helpline run by GamCare, and a statutory regulator that publishes open data on gambling harm.

Self-exclusion: GAMSTOP — one free national register for all GB-licensed online operators.

Not sure which step to take first?

Many people start by calling a helpline to talk things through, then set up self-exclusion and add a blocking tool so the decision sticks. If you are still weighing up whether gambling has become a problem, the warning signs and self-assessment can help you decide.

Common questions

Which gambling helpline should I call if I am not in the UK?
Use the service for the country you are in. Each country section on this page lists its national helpline or support organisation — for example Gambling Help Online in Australia, or the NCPG helpline on 1-800-GAMBLER in the United States. The UK National Gambling Helpline number applies to the UK only.
Does every country have a national self-exclusion register?
No. The UK (GAMSTOP), Germany (OASIS) and Australia (BetStop) run a single national register that covers all licensed operators at once. The United States and Canada do not — exclusion there is arranged state-by-state, province-by-province or operator-by-operator. Ireland's national register is planned but not yet operational.
Are these helplines and registers free to use?
Yes. Every service named on this page is free to contact, and national self-exclusion registers cost nothing to join. You can use most of them anonymously.
Is there support for the family and friends of someone who gambles?
Yes. Organisations such as Gam-Anon and Gamblers Anonymous family groups support people affected by someone else's gambling, and several national helplines take calls from worried relatives as well as from the person gambling.
